Substance Use Prevention & Education

Learn to help someone who has mental health problems or is in crisis:

Mental Health First Aid for Adults is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. More information is available at mentalhealthfirstaid.org.
To register for this free course, please contact Robin Pentecost at rpentecost@goochlandva.us or (804) 556-5408.

Secure your medications:

Lock and Talk promotes safe and responsible care of medications, guns, and other lethal means across the state of Virginia.  Locking medication boxes and gun locks are available from Goochland Powhatan Community Services.  Please contact Robin Pentecost at rpentecost@goochlandva.us or (804) 556-5408 for information about this program.

Dispose of unwanted medications to keep your family safe:

Prescription drug disposal dropboxes provide a safe and secure way to dispose of unused and expired medications.  Dropboxes are available at the following locations:

Powhatan County Sheriff’s Department
3880 Old Buckingham Rd #A
Powhatan, VA 23139

Goochland Pharmacy

Drug deactivation pouches allow for safe neutralization of medications before placing them in the garbage.  Each pouch deactivates 45 pills or 6 ounces of liquid or 6 patches.  These kits are available for free at both Goochland Powhatan Community Services offices, as well as the Goochland Branch Library.

Learn how to administer naloxone to an overdose victim:

REVIVE! Is the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education (OONE) program for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently REVIVE! provides training on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency with the administration of naloxone (Narcan ®).  Classes available from Goochland Powhatan Community Services and the Chickahominy Health District (Goochland Office).

Dispose of used/unwanted needles:

Properly disposing of used or unwanted syringes keeps them from being used illicitly and protects waste management workers and emergency services personnel who could otherwise come into contact with them.
