Substance Abuse Education Classes
The Office of Children’s Services offers Substance Abuse Education classes for teens and their parents.  The course, offered in four sessions (2 hours each) will educate parents and children on alcohol and other drugs, the 5 stages of addiction and risk and protective factors.  There is a fee for the class.  For more information, please contact the Office of Children’s Services at (804) 556-5875 or Mills Jones (Director) at mjones@goochlandva.us

Mental Health First Aid for Youth
Designed to teach parents, family members, and other adults how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.  More information is available at mentalhealthfirstaid.org.  Please contact Robin Pentecost at rpentecost@goochlandva.us or (804) 556-5408 to book courses for groups of 10 to 30 or to find out about existing scheduled courses.

Powhatan Parent Resource Center
Offers assistance to families and educators by encouraging effective partnerships between home and school. The goals of the Parent Resource Center are to:

  • Provide direct support through listening and problem solving with parents and educators.
  • Offer information about local support groups, available services and informative workshops.
  • Help parents understand the special education process.
  • Provide a lending library of books and video tapes on topics of interest to parents and educators.

Cameron K. Gallagher Mental Health Resource Center
Our family navigators support families along their journey.  Our model uses the valuable experiences of families who have navigated the mental health system, providing one-on-one support and referral assistance to families seeking services for their children.  We help families understand the mental health options available for children and assist them in finding therapists, psychiatrists or other appropriate services.
