Mental Health First Aid for Adults is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Locking medication boxes and gun locks are available from Goochland Powhatan Community Services. Drug deactivation pouches allow for safe neutralization of medications before placing them in the garbage. Each pouch deactivates 45 pills or 6 ounces of liquid or 6 patches. These kits are available for free at both Goochland Powhatan Community Services offices, as well as the Goochland Branch Library.
Learn how to administer naloxone to an overdose victim:
REVIVE! Is the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education (OONE) program for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently REVIVE! provides training on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency with the administration of naloxone (Narcan ®). Classes available from Goochland Powhatan Community Services and the Chickahominy Health District (Goochland Office).
Dispose of used/unwanted needles:
Properly disposing of used or unwanted syringes keeps them from being used illicitly and protects waste management workers and emergency services personnel who could otherwise come into contact with them.
